5 Places to Hide a Spare Car Key

We’ve all felt that instant dread when we can’t find our car keys, only to peer through the window and see them lying on the seat of the locked vehicle. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. When this happens, remember to relax and call your trusted locksmiths from Unlock Indy, LLC. We’ll be there in a hurry to help get you back into your vehicle and on your way. But, if you’re out of town or on vacation and this happens, here are five places we suggest hiding a spare.

1. Medicine Bottle

Whether you carry a purse or a messenger bag with you, it's likely that you have a bottle of aspirin or medication with you. If that's the case, using one of these empty bottles as a place to hide a key can really come in handy if you're ever locked out of your vehicle.

2. Under the Car

Hiding a key under the car involves a magnetic lock box and a creative hiding spot. Think of the first five obvious places you'd look for the key, then get creative and think of other places under or around your vehicle to place the box. Avoiding those first few areas you thought of can help you avoid thieves finding it and will help you remember the creative spot you chose.

3. Hitch Receive Box

If your vehicle has a hitch receiver, invest in a lock combination box that slides into this slot and looks like a covering. This option is a great place to hide a key since it's likely not to fall off or be found by unwanted guests. Just don't forget the combination or you'll be calling a locksmith to unlock this as well.

4. Behind the Bumper

Make your key hard to find by placing it behind the bumper. Take some dark color duct tape and take the key to the inside of the bumper to make it difficult for others to find, but still accessible should you need it in the event that you're locked out.

5. Inside the Gas Tank Flap

Similar to how you'd hide a key behind the bumper, you can also hide one inside the gas tank flap. Use a tape that's similar to your car's paint color to make it less obvious. Just make sure it's securely fastened to the inside of the flap so that the flap doesn't come open.
